WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Congressman David Trone, Senators Chris Van Hollen and Ben Cardin and Congressmen Steny H. Hoyer, Dutch Ruppersberger, John P. Sarbanes, Andy Harris, M.D., Kweisi Mfume, Anthony G. Brown, and Jamie B. Raskin (all Md.) announced that Maryland received an award of $17,133,477 in state and national AmeriCorps funding. The award comes from the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), the federal agency responsible for AmeriCorps, and will place more than 1,200 AmeriCorps volunteers into 10 organizations across Maryland.

WASHINGTON - As the COVID-19 pandemic accelerates in our nation’s prisons and jails, U.S. Representatives David Trone (MD-06) and Chairman of the Democratic Caucus Hakeem Jeffries (NY-08) launched a new effort to urge the nation’s governors to collect and release demographic data related to health outcomes in prisons and prison release programs that help decrease the spread of COVID-19. The release programs allow incarcerated individuals to be released under community monitoring or home confinement because they are non-violent and pose minimal risk of recidivism.

Raskin, today announced $46,702,104 for Maryland’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs), and colleges serving large populations of low-income students through the U.S. Department of Education Higher Education and Emergency Relief (HEER) Fund created through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. These supplemental awards are provided on top of those that HBCUs and other MSIs received under the $170 million previously announced by the delegation for Maryland colleges and universities.

Washington, D.C. – Today marks the beginning of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, which commemorates the history, contributions, and achievements of the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community throughout the month of May. The observance originally began as “Asian/Pacific American Heritage Week,” which was established through a joint Congressional resolution in 1978, and was later designated as “Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month” in section 102 of title 36, United States Code. The month of May was chosen due to two important milestones in AAPI history: May 7, 1843, when the first Japanese immigrants arrived in the United States, and May 10, 1869, when the first transcontinental railroad was completed with substantial contributions from Chinese immigrant workers.
