WASHINGTON -- Today, U.S. Representative David Trone (D-MD), along with Reps. Guy Reschenthaler (R-PA), Teresa Leger Fernandez (D-NM), and David McKinley (R-WV), introduced the bipartisan Opioid Patients’ Right to Know Act to help prevent opioid addiction across the country. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), health care providers dispensed over 153 million opioid prescriptions in 2019, and a recent study estimates that 1% to 4% of individuals who take prescription opioids develop opioid use disorder, putting their lives at risk. The Opioid Patients’ Right to Know Act would create a grant program to incentivize states to require prescribers to discuss the addictive qualities of the drugs with patients and inform them of alternative treatment options before prescribing them for acute pain.

Each of the House Committees is responsible for passing COVID relief legislation within its jurisdiction. WASHINGTON -- Today, Congressman David Trone (D-MD) announced that his amendment to the National Apprenticeship Act, which would help establish and strengthen workforce training programs in all federal correctional institutions, passed the House floor. The legislation now heads to the Senate. Justice-impacted individuals face significant barriers to employment when reentering the workforce, with an unemployment rate that is five times higher than the national average. This can often be attributed to the lack of vocational skills and work experience necessary to gain employment. Workforce training programs fill that skills gap, and individuals who participate in these programs while incarcerated are 28% more likely to be employed and 33% less likely to be reincarcerated than individuals who do not participate in these programs. Despite this demonstrated success, these programs are still relatively rare.

WASHINGTON COUNTY, Md. (WDVM) — The Washington County Division of Emergency Services has just been awarded over $8 million dollars from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The funding comes from the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response or SAFER grant funding program. Maryland Democratic Senator Chris Van Hollen stated that the funding is solely from the federal government and that it comes at a time when firefighters and fire stations are stretched thin due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “Right now, our firefighters are doing double duty. They have their ongoing lifesaving mission. They’re also on the front lines of fighting COVID-19.”

Washington County will receive more than $8 million to hire 33 full-time firefighters who will help volunteer companies respond to emergencies. The money is part of $14.76 million in federal funding for Washington, Frederick and Garrett county firefighters announced Wednesday by U.S. Sens. Chris Van Hollen and Ben Cardin, and U.S. Reps. Jamie Raskin and David Trone, all D-Md. "It's incredible. It's a great feeling," R. David Hays, the county's emergency services supervisor, said in an interview Wednesday.

David Trone, D-Md., and two Republican colleagues introduced a bill Friday in an effort to restore Essential Air Service funding for Hagerstown Regional Airport and five other regional airports across the country. Southern Airways stopped providing flights between the local airport and Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport, as well as Pittsburgh International Airport, in mid-October after the U.S. Department of Transportation declared the airport was no longer eligible for Essential Air Service subsidies.
