CUMBERLAND — Western Maryland saw the state’s largest percent increase in opioid deaths in the third quarter of 2020, according to a recently-released state report. Allegany County was particularly hard-hit, experiencing a 111.1% increase in opioid deaths the first nine months of 2020 compared to 2019, per the quarterly Opioid Operational Command Center report. According to the data, 38 residents died of opioid overdoses between January and September 2020, compared with 18 during the same period in 2019.

State and federal legislators must accomplish more to help protect Marylanders and other Americans from overdose deaths during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, U.S. Rep. David Trone (D-MD) said Wednesday. “The devastating increases in overdose deaths throughout my district and the state of Maryland confirm that we are not doing nearly enough to support those with substance use disorders through the COVID-19 pandemic,” said the congressman, who serves on the national Commission on Combating Synthetic Opioid Trafficking. “We need all hands on deck. Lives are at stake.”

CUMBERLAND — Wednesday’s siege of the U.S. Capitol was every bit as surreal and disconcerting in person as it was on social media, television or radio, U.S. Rep. David Trone said Thursday. “It was a lot of anxiety, it was a very uncomfortable feeling and pretty unbelievable to have that level of violence invading the nation’s Capitol. One person was shot, literally killed, right outside the door of the House of Representatives,” said Trone (D-Md.).

The first time Capitol Police came to the House Chamber on Wednesday afternoon, they advised members of Congress that the House had been breached on the first floor by protestors, U.S. Rep. David Trone told The Herald-Mail. All the doors were locked and manned by police while Congress continued to debate the electoral votes from Arizona, Trone said in a phone interview. About 15 to 20 minutes later, Capitol Police returned because protestors had reached the U.S. Capitol's Rotunda, just down the hall from the House floor, Trone said. At that point members of Congress were asked to look under their desks and chairs — under every other chair was a box containing two gas masks they were to open in case they were needed.

WASHINGTON — Four years ago, on New Year’s Eve, U.S. Rep. David Trone (D-Md.) and his family suffered a loss that many families across the district he serves and the country would, sadly, likely find relatable. During a recent interview with the Times-News, the congressman — a Democrat who was recently reelected for a second term representing Maryland’s Sixth Congressional District, which includes Allegany and Garrett counties — shared the story of the life and death of his nephew Ian Trone and reflected on how it has influenced his priorities in office.

MARYLAND (WDVM) — Rep. David Trone spoke with business leaders in the sixth district last week in a regularly-scheduled meeting. Topics that were covered included how businesses are faring as the weather changes, the current state of mental health, the rising opioid epidemic and the limited amount of time before congress recesses. Standing out amongst all of these issues is the ticking clock as time runs out to pass a pandemic relief package that both bodies of Congress can come to an agreement on.

WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) — Members of Congress are expressing concern that the opioid crisis is intensifying as people are home, isolated, and dealing with the stressors of the pandemic. Congressman John Katko, R-New York, and Congressman David Trone, D-Maryland, are suggesting that a new COVID-19 relief bill is needed to help ease the burden on Americans faced with uncertainty. “What I’m seeing is completely alarming,” Katko said. “The current situation is dire,” Trone added.

In the early months of the Trump administration, Washington was awash with rumors that the two parties were hard at work on a bipartisan deal on infrastructure spending. But as time wore on, the plans always fell victim to political gridlock and President Donald Trump’s propensity for Twitter controversies, and soon “Infrastructure Week” became a Washington punchline for the White House’s lack of message discipline. Now, with Joe Biden poised to take office in January, infrastructure’s bipartisan appeal makes federal lawmakers hopeful that it might once again be a key issue when the new Congress takes office.
