Rep. David Trone Introduces ‘International Day of the Girl’ Resolution

Washington, DC - Today, Representative David Trone (MD-06) introduced a resolution to designate October 11, 2019 as Day of the Girl and celebrate the International Day of the Girl in the United States.

International Day of the Girl has been recognized by the United Nations since 2011 in an effort to advance goals to improve the lives of girls and encourage them to aspire to their full potential.

Trone’s resolution was inspired by Maryland youth activist Kana Walsh, a Montgomery County middle school student who has been an advocate for expanding opportunities for girls around the world. Kana previously testified before the Health and Government Operations Committee in the Maryland State Legislature to advocate for recognition of Day of the Girl in the state of Maryland.

“Every child should grow up in a world of equal opportunity,” said Rep. David Trone. “I’m proud to partner with Kana to recognize the importance of International Day of the Girl and to support girls across Maryland, the United States, and the entire world as they reach for their dreams and achieve their potential.”

“We have a moral responsibility to make sure that every human being is treated with kindness, respect, and tolerance,” said Kana Walsh. “For centuries, girls have been denied the same opportunities as boys in education, employment and healthcare. Although things have improved a lot in the past few decades, we still have a long way to go. Unfortunately, there remains a huge gap in the opportunities that are given to boys versus the opportunities that are given to girls in this world. That needs to change. The International Day of the Girl Child can help. One of its goals is that girls are treated with kindness, respect, and tolerance. If that happens, then the gap between the opportunities that are given to boys versus girls will diminish in the future. That is why I am grateful to Representative Trone for sponsoring my resolution to recognize the International Day of the Girl Child in the United States of America. If more Americans celebrated this important day, then more girls would be empowered to realize their full potential.”
