Rep. Trone and Maryland Education Leaders Support $100 Billion School Infrastructure Bill

Washington, DC - Today, Congressman David Trone (MD-06) voted to approve the Rebuild America’s Schools Act in the Education and Labor Committee. The bill now faces a potential vote on the House floor.

The Rebuild America’s Schools Act would invest more than $100 billion in the physical and digital infrastructure of schools across the country, creating 1.9 million good-paying jobs in the process.

“I support this bill because we need to prioritize education and reinvest in our public schools and our future,” said Congressman David Trone, member of the Education and Labor Committee. “When kids have to go to class bundled up in their winter coats, or when a college senior has to start a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for space heaters for her little sister’s classroom, or when we have to close neighborhood schools because mold has taken over -- we are failing our children.

“Ensuring our children receive the education they deserve includes making sure our schools are modern, safe, and healthy. This bill not only gives much needed funding to students and schools, but it creates jobs in the process, spurring economic growth around these communities,” said Trone.

“When our public schools are underfunded, it sends the message to our students that their education is not our top priority,” said Cheryl Bost, President of the Maryland State Education Association and Baltimore County elementary school teacher. “We need to show that the future of our students is important to us by investing in their schools. This bill does just that by focusing on the schools that need the most resources. Public education has notoriously been shortchanged. It’s time we make the investment in our students that they deserve.”

The Rebuild America’s Schools Act is sponsored by Bobby Scott (VA-3), Chairman of the Education and Labor Committee. The bill has 164 co-sponsors, including Rep. David Trone.

Congressman David Trone was elected to the House of Representatives in November 2018 to serve the 6th District of Maryland, which includes all or part of Montgomery, Frederick, Washington, Allegany, and Garrett Counties. Trone serves on the Education and Labor, Foreign Affairs, and Joint Economic Committees, where he is fighting to make progress on issues that matter to Marylanders, including the opioid epidemic, criminal justice reform, and funding for medical research.
