Rep. Trone Hosts Virtual Roundtable with Travel and Tourism Leaders from Maryland’s Sixth District to Discuss Impacts of COVID-19 Pandemic

GAITHERSBURG — Yesterday, Congressman David Trone (MD-06) hosted a virtual roundtable with the U.S Travel Association and tourism leaders from Maryland to discuss the impacts of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic on Maryland’s tourism industry.

This event comes as Maryland’s tourism economy continues to decline, heavily impacting communities in Western Maryland that depend on the tourism industry. The virtual roundtable featured representatives from the U.S Travel Association, the Maryland Tourism Coalition, Maryland Office of Tourism Development, Visit Frederick, Visit Deep Creek Lake / Garrett County Chamber of Commerce, Visit Hagerstown and Washington County, and more.

“The importance of supporting those who work in the tourism industry cannot be overstated. The industry has taken a massive hit during this pandemic, and no one was hurt more than Western Maryland,” said Congressman David Trone. “Yesterday I heard directly from local leaders about how they have been impacted by COVID-19 and what the federal government must do to help them keep their doors open. One thing is for sure — we need to pass the HEROES Act to get these businesses the resources they need to weather this crisis.”

On May 15th, Congressman Trone voted in favor of the HEROES Act, which strengthens the Paycheck Protection Program to help small businesses and nonprofits survive this pandemic. Congressman Trone also backs the Local Chamber, Tourism, and 501(c)(6) Protection Act to include travel-related businesses and organizations in PPP coverage.

Congressman David Trone was elected to the House of Representatives in November 2018 to serve the 6th District of Maryland, which includes all or part of Montgomery, Frederick, Washington, Allegany, and Garrett Counties. Trone serves on the Education and Labor, Foreign Affairs, and Joint Economic Committees, where he is fighting to make progress on issues that matter to Marylanders, including the opioid epidemic, criminal justice reform, and funding for medical research.
