Trone Statement on Passing of Chairman Elijah Cummings

Washington, DC – Rep. David Trone (MD-06), released the below statement following the passing of Chairman Elijah Cummings:

“The enormity of the loss felt with the passing of Elijah Cummings has reverberated throughout Maryland and this entire country. Elijah Cummings was a voice for the powerless in the halls of power. He had a giant heart and acted as the conscience for America when we needed it most. Baltimore had no greater champion.

“His commitment to fair treatment had no peer. We shared a concern for those impacted by the opioid epidemic and the criminal justice system. He was a champion in the fight to ensure those suffering from addiction had the resources they need to recover and to give every American a fair chance in life. Working alongside my colleagues in the Maryland delegation, I will draw on his legacy for inspiration, and I hope to continue his fight in the months and years to come.

“Elijah Cummings was a giant. He was a mentor and teacher, always making time for the next generation of leaders, activists, and advocates who will shape the country for generations to come. June and I are sad beyond words at his passing but take comfort knowing that our friend and hero is “dancing with the angels.” Our condolences go out to Maya and his three children.”
