WASHINGTON – The Maryland congressional delegation, including U.S. Congressman David Trone, Senators Ben Cardin and Chris Van Hollen and Congressmen Steny H. Hoyer, Dutch Ruppersberger, John P. Sarbanes, Kweisi Mfume, Andy Harris, M.D., Anthony G. Brown, and Jamie B. Raskin, announced the award of $4,125,118 for Maryland’s fishing industry through the Department of Commerce (DOC) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Last month, the delegation wrote to Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross and NOAA Administrator Chris Oliver to urge the swift allocation of this funding, which was authorized by the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. The CARES Act provided $300 million nationally for businesses in the fishing industry who have been negatively affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Congressman David Trone, Senator Chris Van Hollen and Congressman John Sarbanes (all D-Md.) led Chesapeake Bay delegation members in sending a bicameral letter to Bay Watershed Governors Larry Hogan (R-Md.), Tom Wolf (D-Penn.), John Carney (D-Del.), Ralph Northam (D-Va.), and Jim Justice (R-W.Va.); and Mayor Muriel Bowser (D-D.C.) urging them to maintain rigorous environmental standards crucial to the health of the Bay, despite the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) decision to relax enforcement of these standards. In their letter, the Members also ask the states and the District of Columbia to provide an update on their current actions to ensure proper enforcement.

Raskin, today announced $16,105,784 in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding for the state of Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD). This flexible funding source will allow the state of Maryland to provide a coordinated response to housing and other public service needs resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sarbanes, Andy Harris, M.D., Kweisi Mfume, Anthony G. Brown, and Jamie B. Raskin (all Md.) announced that Maryland received an award of $17,133,477 in state and national AmeriCorps funding. The award comes from the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), the federal agency responsible for AmeriCorps, and will place more than 1,200 AmeriCorps volunteers into 10 organizations across Maryland.

WASHINGTON - As the COVID-19 pandemic accelerates in our nation’s prisons and jails, U.S. Representatives David Trone (MD-06) and Chairman of the Democratic Caucus Hakeem Jeffries (NY-08) launched a new effort to urge the nation’s governors to collect and release demographic data related to health outcomes in prisons and prison release programs that help decrease the spread of COVID-19. The release programs allow incarcerated individuals to be released under community monitoring or home confinement because they are non-violent and pose minimal risk of recidivism.

Sarbanes, Andy Harris, M.D., Anthony G. Brown, and Jamie B. Raskin, today announced $46,702,104 for Maryland’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs), and colleges serving large populations of low-income students through the U.S. Department of Education Higher Education and Emergency Relief (HEER) Fund created through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. These supplemental awards are provided on top of those that HBCUs and other MSIs received under the $170 million previously announced by the delegation for Maryland colleges and universities.
