WASHINGTON - Today, U.S. Representatives David Trone (D-MD) and Guy Rechenthaler (R-PA) introduced the bipartisan Confidentiality Opportunities for Peer Support (COPS) Counseling Act. The legislation would increase privacy protections for officers in peer counseling programs by creating clear standards for confidentiality.

Washington, D.C. – Today marks the beginning of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, which commemorates the history, contributions, and achievements of the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community throughout the month of May. The observance originally began as “Asian/Pacific American Heritage Week,” which was established through a joint Congressional resolution in 1978, and was later designated as “Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month” in section 102 of title 36, United States Code. The month of May was chosen due to two important milestones in AAPI history: May 7, 1843, when the first Japanese immigrants arrived in the United States, and May 10, 1869, when the first transcontinental railroad was completed with substantial contributions from Chinese immigrant workers. Raskin, announced the approval of new federal resources for the state of Maryland through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Crisis Counseling Assistance and Training Program (CCP). This is one of the forms of federal assistance that Maryland is eligible for through the Stafford Act as a result of the major disaster declaration that the delegation pushed to obtain swift approval for last month.

WASHINGTON – The full Maryland congressional delegation, including U.S. Congressman David Trone, Senators Ben Cardin and Chris Van Hollen and Congressmen Steny H. Hoyer, Dutch Ruppersberger, John P. Sarbanes, Andy Harris, M.D., Anthony G. Brown, and Jamie B. Raskin, today announced approval by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) of Maryland’s plan to provide new Pandemic EBT (P-EBT) assistance to all Maryland children who would receive free or reduced-price lunches if not for school closures. The Maryland Department of Human Services estimates that approximately 427,000 children will benefit from the program for a combined value of over $49 million in estimated assistance. Maryland is one of 12 states whose plans have already been approved.
