WASHINGTON – U.S. Congressman David Trone, Senators Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and Richard Durbin (D-IL) and Representatives Marcia Fudge (D-OH), Chair of the House Committee on Agriculture Subcommittee on Nutrition, Oversight and Department Operations, and Anna Eshoo (D-CA), Chair of the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health, along with 140 colleagues in both the House and Senate, urged Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Ajit Pai to work directly with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to ensure that the millions of Americans who are now eligible for the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP) or Medicaid due to job loss or reduction in income are informed that they are also eligible for the FCC’s Lifeline program. The Lifeline program is the primary federal program charged with helping low-income families obtain broadband and telephone services.

PHILADELPHIA (April 24, 2020) – In conjunction with the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) awarded $240,000 today to replace 12 older diesel school buses in Maryland. The funds are among $11.5 million going to replace 580 older diesel school buses in 157 school bus fleets in 43 states and Puerto Rico, each of which will receive rebates through EPA’s Diesel Emissions Reduction Act (DERA) funding. The new buses will reduce pollutants that are linked to health problems such as asthma and lung damage. In Maryland, the funds are going to: Allegany County School District ($40,000) Frederick County School District ($200,000)

Sarbanes, and Jamie Raskin and U.S. Senators Ben Cardin and Chris Van Hollen (all D-Md.) wrote to United States Secretary of Veterans Affairs Robert Wilkie to express concerns that loan servicers are not allowing veterans with VA Home Loans to access forbearance relief during the COVID-19 crisis. The CARES Act included protection for borrowers with federally backed mortgage loans who are experiencing financial hardships and are unable to make payments due to this crisis. VA Home Loans are covered under this new law.
