Washington DC (KM) A grant totaling nearly 900-thousand dollars is being awarded to Mount Saint Mary’s University in partnership with Frederick Community College and Montgomery College.

The amount, $899,926, will be used to support the completion of degrees by low income, high achieving students in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, according to a statement by the Maryland Congressional Delegation.

The program will organize 27 FCC and Montgomery College students into cohorts and support their education in the STEM fields from their pre-transfer period to their post graduation job placement. The Delegation says researchers will evaluate the academic and employment outcomes of the students who participated in the program to measure their successes.

The funds come from the National Science Foundation’s Scholarship in Science, Technology, Education and Mathematics program which aims to increase the number of low income students earning degrees in STEM fields.

The grant was announced on Thursday by Senators Chris Van Hollen and Ben Cardin, and Representatives David Trone and Jaime Raskin.
