Trone Issues Statement on Justice Breyer’s Retirement Announcement

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Congressman David Trone (MD-06) issued the below statement following Justice Stephen Breyer’s announcement of his retirement from the U.S. Supreme Court:

“Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer served his country honorably for nearly three decades, committing a substantial part of his life to this country and its rule of law. As a member of the highest court in the land, Justice Breyer often spoke publicly about the imperative for the Supreme Court to operate separately from one’s own politics – a value that I personally respect and admire a great deal. His legacy will live on through many of his most consequential decisions, including authoring the majority opinion to uphold the Affordable Care Act to ensure equitable and affordable health care for Americans. Amid continued mental health and substance use disorder crises, this decision has – without question – saved thousands of lives. Upon the nomination of his successor, I urge the Senate to move quickly and deliberately to confirm a new Supreme Court Justice.”

Congressman David Trone was elected to the House of Representatives in November 2018 to serve the 6th District of Maryland, which includes all or part of Montgomery, Frederick, Washington, Allegany, and Garrett Counties. Trone serves on the Appropriations, Veterans’ Affairs, and Joint Economic Committees. In Congress, Trone is fighting to make progress on issues that matter to Marylanders, including the mental health and addiction crises, criminal justice reform, and funding for medical research.
