News From the District: Congressman Trone Delivers Community Project Funding Checks, Secures Crucial Community Investments
Congressman Trone presents $4,000,000 to the Boys and Girls Club of Washington County, alongside representatives from Senators Cardin and Van Hollen’s teams
FREDERICK, MD — Last week, Congressman David Trone (MD-06) visited Washington and Frederick Counties to meet with local leaders and present Community Project Funding he secured through the Fiscal Year (FY) 2023 federal budget.
On Thursday, Trone visited Hagerstown to meet with the Washington County Boys and Girls Club to present $4 million in federal funding for a new clubhouse and teen center. The clubhouse will help the Boys and Girls Club double its average daily attendance and the teen center will allow for the implementation of a new workforce development program. Senators Van Hollen and Cardin both worked alongside Congressman Trone to secure this federal funding for Washington County. He then stopped by Sheppard Pratt, a nonprofit health care provider, to present $1 million in funding to expand its outpatient mental health clinic. Representatives from Senators Cardin and Van Hollen’s teams also attended the events.
Afterward, Trone was honored with an award for his efforts to secure $5 million in funding for the Boonsboro-Keedysville Regional Water System Reservoir Replacement Project to repair Washington County’s drinking water reservoir. Senator Van Hollen also worked to secure funding to ensure safe, clean drinking water for Washington County – and was similarly awarded for his efforts. Congressman Trone wrapped up the day by touring the new Washington County Public Safety Training Center with Sheriff Brian Albert.
On Friday, Trone stopped by Frederick to deliver $698,000 in funding to the County’s Crisis Stabilization Center for new medical equipment. The equipment will be used to better treat folks experiencing a mental or behavioral health crisis. He then presented City officials, including Mayor Michael O’Connor, with $4 million for the East Street Trail Liberty Road Bridge Crossing, which will expand the city’s shared-use path and on-street bike network.
Trone finished delivering his Community Project Funding awards by presenting $1.315 million to Frederick’s Permanent Supportive Housing, Food Distribution Center, and Soup Kitchen. More than 22,000 people in Frederick are experiencing food insecurity, and this funding will play a huge role in ensuring that the center and soup kitchen can meet folks’ basic needs. Senators Van Hollen and Cardin worked alongside Congressman Trone to secure this dedicated federal funding for Frederick – improving health care, infrastructure, and housing and food services for the community.
Trone finished up the day by joining Ysela Bravo from the County Executive Fitzwater’s office for the grand opening of the new men’s residential inpatient facility at the Orenda Center for Wellness in Buckeystown. As overdoses increase in Maryland and across the country, investments in facilities that are dedicated to recovery will save lives.
“As a member of the House Appropriations Committee, I was proud to secure over $30 million in Community Project Funding for Maryland’s Sixth District alongside Senators Ben Cardin and Chris Van Hollen. Whether we are investing in mental health clinics, our children, medical equipment, or upgrades to our local infrastructure, we are setting up Marylanders for success,” said Congressman Trone. “It shouldn’t be bureaucrats dictating and directing funding; it should be Marylanders, the folks who know best where the help is needed most.”
“Federal investments in our communities that prioritize local needs and partners are exactly why Team Maryland supports these congressionally directed projects,” said Senator Cardin. “We fought side-by-side for these latest earmarks because they advance long-planned and widely supported projects for Maryland.”
“We fought together to secure these direct federal investments to meet local needs and strengthen our communities. From expanding access to health care to modernizing infrastructure to boosting workforce development, these investments will have a meaningful impact on the lives of thousands of Marylanders across Washington and Frederick Counties,” said Senator Van Hollen, a member of the Appropriations Committee.
Local leaders also voiced their support for the federal funding when it passed into law in December:
“The City of Frederick appreciates the strong support we continue to receive from Congressman Trone regarding projects that advance important goals in our community,” said Frederick City Mayor Michael O’Connor. “The East Street Rails and Trails project, including the bridge over Route 26, will create an important connection for bicyclists and pedestrians improving transportation options for everyone. Our Housing and Human Services renovations at 100 South Market Street will enhance service delivery to our residents most in need while recognizing the changes needed to meet our customers in post-COVID.”
“We know Frederick County needs a crisis stabilization center to provide care and a safe place for people with mental health and substance abuse issues while they wait to connect to other long-term care services,” Former Frederick County Executive Jan Gardner said. “I am grateful for the support of Congressman Trone and our entire Federal delegation on this project so we can provide this missing piece of our behavioral health care continuum.”
“The lack of access to behavioral health and substance use services is particularly acute in Washington County, and they are two of the county’s top priorities,” said a spokesperson of Sheppard Pratt. “By working with Washington County and expanding access to outpatient treatment and services, Sheppard Pratt is committed to meeting the demands of the community and ensuring its residents have greater access to quality behavioral healthcare.”
“We have worked closely with Congressman Trone and his amazing team on our Community Project Funding Request. The Congressman has made not one, but three visits to the clubhouse we are replacing,” said Addie Nardi, CEO, Boys and Girls Club of Washington County. ”Everyone on Team Trone is so responsive, whether it’s guiding us on the application process, keeping us updated, or reassuring us about our request. We are so grateful for the support. When this project is finished, Congressman Trone will have played a huge part in replacing an over 100-year-old building for our 100-plus kids.”
Congressman David Trone was elected to the House of Representatives in November 2018 to serve the 6th District of Maryland, which includes all or part of Montgomery, Frederick, Washington, Allegany, and Garrett Counties. Trone serves on the Appropriations, Budget, and Joint Economic Committees in the 118th Congress. In Congress, Trone is fighting to make progress on issues that matter to Marylanders, including the mental health and addiction crises, criminal justice reform, and funding for medical research.
