Congressman David Trone Announces Nearly $10 Million in Requested Community Project Funding for Washington County

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Congressman David Trone (MD-06) announced he requested $44,774,100 in Community Project Funding for Fiscal Year (FY) 2024 to the House Committee on Appropriations, including nearly $10 million for Washington County. Community Project Funding is dedicated federal funding going toward specific local projects with a clear, documented benefit to communities. Next, the Committee will develop its final government funding package, taking Community Project Funding requests into consideration, and work to pass its proposed package into law.

“As a member of the House Appropriations Committee, my job is to ensure communities across the country are equipped to serve and provide vital resources to folks in need,” said Congressman David Trone. “Through Community Project Funding, Members of Congress get to hear straight from our local leaders about what federal funding is needed, creating a direct line of funding from Congress to our Main Streets. With this investment into Maryland’s Sixth District, we’re going to create more jobs, upgrade deteriorating infrastructure, and expand essential services. By partnering with the folks who know what investments need to be prioritized, we’re building a brighter future for all Marylanders.”

The following Washington County projects were successfully submitted to the House Committee on Appropriations. 

• $5,000,000 for a Drinking Water Reservoir Replacement for the Town of Boonsboro, MD
• $2,500,000 for BEACON House, Inc. Childcare & School Consolidation and Expansion
• $1,300,000 for a Public Safety Training Center for the Washington County Division of Emergency Services
• $750,000 for the Speak Up Community Newsroom and Neighborhood Meeting Center

“For years, Boonsboro’s drinking water reservoir has been failing, leading to an increasingly insecure water supply. This $5 million in federal Community Project Funding will replace our reservoir and ensure the Boonsboro-Keedysville community has a dependable clean water source for decades to come,” said Mayor of Boonsboro Howard Long. This is government working as it should, and Marylanders have a strong partner in Congressman Trone to deliver what they need.”

“This much-needed Community Project Funding will allow BEACON House to renovate and expand its facilities, allowing more children in Washington County to benefit from early learning and more working parents to benefit from increased career opportunities,” said Executive Director Anthony Williams. “By providing the tools our children and our parents need, we are setting them up for a lifetime of success. We thank Congressman David Trone for his partnership and leadership in delivering resources to Marylanders.”

“Our communities only stand to benefit when our first responders are well-trained to handle emergencies,” said Director R. David Hays. “This new public safety training center will go a long way in facilitating more hands-on training for firefighters, law enforcement, and EMS – ensuring our community’s health and safety. That’s our top priority, and we thank Congressman Trone for fighting for Maryland’s first responders in Congress.”

This federal Community Project Funding will allow the Speak Up Community Newsroom and Neighborhood Meeting Center to serve more youth in Washington County and help give them a real voice,” said President Andy Smith. “We know that when everyone has a seat at the table, our communities are safer, healthier, and more successful. Congressman David Trone was elected to the House of Representatives in November 2018 to serve the 6th District of Maryland, which includes all or part of Montgomery, Frederick, Washington, Allegany, and Garrett Counties. Trone serves on the Appropriations, Budget, and Joint Economic Committees in the 118th Congress. In Congress, Trone is fighting to make progress on issues that matter to Marylanders, including the mental health and addiction crises, criminal justice reform, and funding for medical research.
