Congressman David Trone Slams House Republicans’ FY 2024 Budget Resolution
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman David Trone (D-MD), member of the House Budget Committee, released a statement condemning devastating funding cuts during the Committee’s markup of the House Republicans’ Fiscal Year 2024 budget resolution:
“Today, we are 10 days from a government shutdown without any sign of progress towards resolution because Republicans reneged on the bipartisan budget deal they voted for in June. Republicans are trying to deliver on unrealistic and unsustainable campaign promises – and as it stands, face an impossible path to passage into law.
“If this extreme Republican were implemented, in Maryland, 600 kids would be cut from Head Start and 4,400 teachers kicked out of the classroom. This is their vision for America.
“They say they want to decrease the national debt, and who doesn’t? But in reality, Republicans are engaged in an insidious cycle of starving our government of resources, complaining that the government doesn’t work, and then cutting some more.
“As the biggest job creator on this committee, I’ll tell you the truth about investment: Debt is an investment in your business, your idea, and your people. It’s about thinking long-term.
“Our decisions in this room can be the difference between stagnation and innovation.
“I opposed this budget resolution, and I hope my colleagues on the other side are willing to deliver actual solutions if they want to balance the budget, rather than this charade.”
Congressman David Trone was elected to the House of Representatives in November 2018 to serve the 6th District of Maryland, which includes all or part of Montgomery, Frederick, Washington, Allegany, and Garrett Counties. Trone serves on the Appropriations, Budget, and Joint Economic Committees. In Congress, Trone is fighting to make progress on issues that matter to Marylanders.
