Congressman David Trone Named to House Appropriations Committee
WASHINGTON — Following Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s announcement that the House Democratic Steering Committee nominated Congressman David Trone for an appointment to the House Appropriations Committee in the 117th Congress, Congressman Trone released the following statement:
“I am honored that Speaker Pelosi, Majority Leader Hoyer, and the Democratic Steering and Policy Committee have the trust and confidence to nominate me to serve on the Appropriations Committee for the 117th Congress,” said Congressman Trone. “Right now our nation has to tackle some of the most pressing challenges we’ve faced in decades. With a global pandemic, a worsening addiction and mental health crisis, and an economy that is leaving workers, families, and small businesses behind, we need smart, long-term investments that live up to our American values and build our country back better. I’m ready to get to work under the leadership of Chair Rosa DeLauro to fight for working families and create a better future for our children.”
The Appropriations Committee is the most powerful committee in Congress. With one of the broadest jurisdictions, the committee is responsible for appropriating funding for the federal government. Trone joins the committee at the start of his second term representing Maryland’s 6th District, which includes all or part of Montgomery, Frederick, Washington, Allegany, and Garrett Counties.
Trone’s Work in the 116th Congress
In the 116th Congress, Trone served on the Education and Labor, Foreign Affairs, and Joint Economic Committees, where he fought to make progress on issues that matter to Marylanders, including ending the opioid epidemic, reforming our criminal justice system, and increasing our investment in medical research.
Trone has made ending the addiction epidemic his top priority as a Member of Congress. He founded the Freshmen Working Group on Addiction, a bipartisan group of 60+ Members of Congress dedicated to ending the addiction crisis. The group introduced more than 55 pieces of legislation in the 116th Congress to address the issue, including Trone’s bipartisan State Opioid Response Grant Authorization Act, and Family Support Services for Addiction Act, which both unanimously passed the House of Representatives.
Earlier this year, Speaker Pelosi appointed Trone to the National Commission on Combating Synthetic Opioid Trafficking for his dedication to ending the opioid epidemic.
Trone also championed legislation to create a more equitable justice system. He introduced bills to incentivize local governments and community partners to invest in programs to reduce jail populations and reform their pretrial justice systems, to ban the box on private sector employment applications, and to repeal the ban on incarcerated individuals receiving Pell Grants. He also led efforts to increase federal investments in state juvenile justice programs that foster better outcomes for youth. His bill to allow partnerships between correctional institutions and mental health providers for incarcerated individuals passed the House in December and is headed to the President’s desk for signature.
Before Coming to Congress
Before coming to Congress, Trone founded a small business which he successfully grew to an organization with over 10,000 employees located in more than 27 states nationwide. He brings decades of business, entrepreneurial, and philanthropic experience to the Appropriations Committee.
