Trone Tours Addiction Treatment Centers in Sixth District to Elevate “The Voices of Recovery in the Time of COVID”
GAITHERSBURG, MD — In honor of National Recovery Month, U.S. Congressman David Trone (MD-06) toured addiction treatment centers throughout Western Maryland to hear directly from people in recovery about their experience during the COVID-19 outbreak.

- Fort Recovery Inc., Cumberland, Md
“Yesterday, I heard directly from those in recovery about how they’re dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic and what we in Congress need to be doing to support them,” said Congressman David Trone. “The pandemic has made recovery that much harder for folks suffering from substance use disorders. Our number-one priority during this pandemic should be getting resources in the hands of those who are struggling so that they can remain safe and healthy.”
The visits kicked off a series of events Trone is holding during National Recovery Month focusing on the challenges of those in recovery during the COVID-19 pandemic. Last week, Trone announced an historic bipartisan, bicameral effort in Congress to highlight National Recovery Month, including efforts throughout the month to address the importance of mental health and substance use disorder treatment. Immediately following the announcement, Trone sent a letter to the Government Accountability Office requesting information about the current number of and projected demand for mental and behavioral health workers.
Trone has made ending the addiction epidemic his top priority as a Member of Congress. He founded the Freshmen Working Group on Addiction, a bipartisan group of 60+ Members of Congress dedicated to ending the addiction crisis. The group has introduced more than 30 pieces of legislation to address the issue.
Trone introduced the State Opioid Response Grant Authorization Act, which would provide nine billion dollars in funding for state and local governments, and the Family Support Services for Addiction Act, which would help families struggling with substance use disorders. Both bills are set to be considered by the Energy and Commerce Committee today.
Congressman David Trone was elected to the House of Representatives in November 2018 to serve the 6th District of Maryland, which includes all or part of Montgomery, Frederick, Washington, Allegany, and Garrett Counties. Trone serves on the Education and Labor, Foreign Affairs, and Joint Economic Committees, where he is fighting to make progress on issues that matter to Marylanders, including the opioid epidemic, criminal justice reform, and funding for medical research.
