Rep. David Trone, Education and Labor Committee Members Introduce College Affordability Act

Washington, DC – Today Rep. David Trone and members of the Education and Labor Committee introduced the College Affordability Act (CAA), a comprehensive overhaul of the higher education system that would lower the cost of college, improve the quality of higher education by holding institutions accountable, and expand opportunity for students from all backgrounds.

The landmark legislation includes four bills led by Rep. Trone, including his bill to repeal the ban on Pell Grants for incarcerated students and legislation that would help institutions of higher education implement evidence-based programs to prevent alcohol and substance misuse on campus. All four Trone-led provisions included in the CAA are below:

“Over the past year, I met with students, parents, and educators to learn about how we can improve our higher education system. I heard loud and clear that we need to put students first and invest in our educators and schools,” said Rep. Trone, member of the Education and Labor Committee. “That’s why I am so proud to help introduce the College Affordability Act, which will make student loans work for students again, simplify FAFSA, and expand opportunities for low-income students and students of color. I am grateful that Chairman Scott included four of my bills in this legislation, and I look forward to passing this bill into law.”

Congressman David Trone was elected to the House of Representatives in November 2018 to serve the 6th District of Maryland, where he has continuously fought for students, teachers, and educators. As the only member from Maryland on the Education and Labor Committee, Trone has made education a top priority, taking an education tour of the district in August and introducing multiple bills aimed at supporting an equitable education for students and supporting Maryland educators.
