Rep. David Trone Hosts Recovery in the Time of COVID-19 Webinar, Introduces Legislation to Fund Recovery Month Efforts

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Congressman David Trone (MD-06) hosted a ‘Recovery in the Time of COVID-19’ webinar with the Freshmen Working Group on Addiction and special guests Reps. David Joyce (OH-14), John Joyce (PA-13), and Lori Trahan (MA-03), and a panel of leading experts on addiction. He also introduced new legislation to help fund National Recovery Month recognition efforts.

The conversation comes as part of a historic effort to turn Congress purple in recognition of National Recovery Month

The group discussed how the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the addiction crisis in each Congressional district, and what must be done in the halls of Congress to make recovery a reality for the millions of Americans suffering from mental health and substance use disorders.

The panel of leading experts in the field included:

  • Patty McCarthy, Executive Director of Faces & Voices of Recovery (FVR)
  • Jim Carroll, Director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP)
  • Sazha Ramos, Founder of Recovery Organization Resources
  • Dr. Nora Volkow, Director of National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA)

During the webinar, Congressman Trone introduced the Honoring National Recovery Month Act with Congressman Denver Riggleman (R-VA) to provide dedicated funding to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) for resources and education during National Recovery Month. Should SAMHSA not wish to participate in National Recovery Month, the bill requires the agency to reallocate funding to a national organization with experience coordinating National Recovery Month activities.

“This was a great opportunity to come together in a bipartisan way to find solutions to the addiction crisis in America,” said Congressman David Trone. “I’d like to thank my Congressional colleagues and the experts that joined us today for this important discussion. When we work together, we can end this epidemic once and for all.”
