Reps. Trone, Raskin Praise State-County Partnership to Open First Mass Vaccination Site in Montgomery County
GAITHERSBURG, MD – Congressmen David Trone and Jamie Raskin (both D-MD) issued the following statement after Dr. Earl Stoddard, Director of the Montgomery County Office of Emergency Management & Homeland Security, announced during a briefing with the Montgomery County Council that the County will soon open its first COVID-19 mass vaccination site:
“We are thrilled by today’s announcement that Montgomery County will at last be home to a COVID-19 mass vaccination site. The new site, which will be housed at the Montgomery College Germantown Campus, will host a one-of-a-kind partnership among the State of Maryland, Montgomery County, Holy Cross Health, and Montgomery College. We are hopeful it will be operational within a few weeks and equipped to administer 3,000 vaccines per day.
“As we highlighted in our letter to Governor Hogan calling for a mass vaccination site of this kind, the County ranks first in COVID-19 deaths and second in case count. With over a million residents and a majority-minority population, Montgomery County is the most populous and diverse county in the state. Operating a mass vaccination site in the County is a public health imperative for our constituents.
“As we requested in our letter, the Maryland Department of Health has increased the amount of vaccine doses supplied to the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services to enable the creation of this initial county-run vaccination site.
“As our coalition of federal, county, and local partners pushed for many months to make this happen, this is great and welcome news for all of our constituents in Montgomery County. We look forward to continuing to work diligently and closely together to see this site come to life and save the lives and livelihoods of our people.”
