Three of Trone’s Bills Endorsed by New Democrat Coalition

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, the New Democrat Coalition endorsed three of Congressman Trone’s bipartisan bills aimed at addressing mental health and substance use disorders. In response, Rep. Trone, founder and co-chair of the Bipartisan Addiction and Mental Health Task Force and member of the New Democrat Coalition, released the following statement:

“It’s time for the United States to take control of our own destiny to tackle the mental health and addiction crises in our communities.

“These three bills address crucial elements of these issues: prevention, treatment, and recovery. While clamping down on drug trafficking across the Southern Border is essential, it’s no silver bullet. We must do more to treat substance use disorder or, better yet, prevent it before it even starts.

“As Hubert Humphrey once said, ‘the moral test of government is how we treat those who… are in the shadows of life.’ We must come together to develop solutions that fight these issues on every front.

“With the President’s Unity Agenda and the support of my colleagues in the New Democrat Coalition, I am confident we have the momentum to pass common-sense legislation and get the job done.”

The New Dems’ number one priority has always been to break through the gridlock to deliver on legislation that improves Americans’ lives. That’s why the New Dems are answering President Biden’s call at the State of the Union for action on a Unity Agenda by working to send these bipartisan, commonsense solutions to the President’s desk this year. These bills will tackle the rise in synthetic opioids like fentanyl, increase access to health care services, create more comprehensive mental and behavioral health services, prioritize kids’ mental health, and more.

As part of its slate, the New Democrat Coalition endorsed the following bills led by Trone:

  • H.R. 2376 – Excellence in Recovery Housing Act
  • H.R.1385 – Behavioral Health Coordination and Communication Act
  • H.R.3549  Comprehensive Mental Health In Schools Pilot Program Act

As the largest Democratic caucus in the House, The New Democrat Coalition is composed of 98 forward-thinking Democrats who are committed to pro-economic growth, pro-innovation, and fiscally responsible policies.

Congressman David Trone was elected to the House of Representatives in November 2018 to serve the 6th District of Maryland, which includes all or part of Montgomery, Frederick, Washington, Allegany, and Garrett Counties. Trone serves on the Appropriations, Veterans’ Affairs, and Joint Economic Committees. In Congress, Trone is fighting to make progress on issues that matter to Marylanders, including the mental health and addiction crises, criminal justice reform, and funding for medical research.
