Congressman Trone named “Defender of Children” by First Focus Campaign for Children

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congressman David Trone (MD-06) has been named a 2022 Defender of Children by the bipartisan advocacy organization First Focus Campaign for Children. Just 40 – out of 435 – members of the U.S. House of Representatives receive this distinction each year. Congressman Trone has earned the award every year he’s served in Congress.

First Focus Campaign for Children’s 2022 Legislative Scorecard ranks members of Congress according to votes and bill sponsorships taken during the 117th Congress that prioritize the well-being of children in the U.S. and around the world. The new report examines key pieces of legislation designed to reduce child poverty, protect unhoused children, aid those who lost caregivers to COVID-19, guard against environmental threats, ensure that children have enough to eat, and address other issues critical to advancing the needs of all children everywhere.

Congressman Trone was a lead sponsor of the Schools Preventing Hunger in At-Risk Kids Act, which would ensure children living with relatives or family friends would be eligible for free school lunch. Trone is currently working to secure $4 million in FY23 Community Project Funding (CPF) for the Boys & Girls Club of Washington County to construct a new clubhouse to expand programming for at-risk youth. Trone also requested over $500,000 in FY23 CPF to help construct a new childcare center for the City of Frostburg. Trone already secured $1.5 million of FY22 CPF for the Asian American Center of Frederick which will, in part, improve and expand youth programming.

“I’m honored to be named a Defender of Children by First Focus Campaign for Children. I’ll continue fighting to strengthen education, end child poverty, and ensure every child has access to nutrition and high-quality health care,” said Congressman David Trone. “Investments in our youth are investments in the future of our nation. Every child deserves opportunities for a brighter future.”

“Children too often are an afterthought when it comes to policy and legislation,” said Bruce Lesley, president of First Focus Campaign for Children. “We are grateful to Congressman Trone for always putting children first and acting in their best interest. We hope this accomplishment will inspire his colleagues to do the same.”

Congressman David Trone was elected to the House of Representatives in November 2018 to serve the 6th District of Maryland, which includes all or part of Montgomery, Frederick, Washington, Allegany, and Garrett Counties. Trone serves on the Appropriations, Veterans’ Affairs, and Joint Economic Committees. In Congress, Trone is fighting to make progress on issues that matter to Marylanders, including the mental health and addiction crises, criminal justice reform, and funding for medical research.
