The House will vote this week on a Senate-passed bill to remove from the Capitol the bust of Roger B. Taney, the Supreme Court justice who wrote the Dred Scott decision, Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (D-Md.) told reporters Tuesday.
Under the legislation, the bust will be replaced with a bust of Thurgood Marshall, the first African American member of the Supreme Court. The bust of Taney sits outside the old Supreme Court chamber on the first floor of the Capitol.
Legislation to remove Taney’s bust was first introduced by Hoyer and Rep. David Trone (D-Md.) in March 2020. (Taney, like Hoyer and Trone, was from Maryland.)
