Congressman David Trone Releases Statement on Speaker McCarthy

Congressman David Trone (D-MD), who was hospitalized Friday morning for a surgery and returned to the Capitol to vote later that same day, released the following statement after Speaker Kevin McCarthy won the Speaker election and was sworn into office:

“Early Saturday morning, now-Speaker Kevin McCarthy traded for his personal ambitions at the expense of the American people. Through his wheeling and dealing with the Tyrannous Twenty, he has backed our country into a corner.

“Soon enough, fringe politicians — now in outsized positions of power and influence — will govern through extreme partisanship and petty politics. American workers and their families will be affected by government shutdowns in the name of fake fiscal responsibility. Endangered democracies like Ukraine could fall for the sake of anti-spending talking points.

“This is the future negotiated by Kevin McCarthy to gain access to the highest office in the most powerful legislative body in the United States of America.

“We can do better. Now, we must work together — Republicans and Democrats — to fight for the good of the American people, the vast majority of us now held hostage by the demands of the extreme few.

“We must work to find common ground to address our nation’s greatest challenges and reaffirm our commitment to good-faith bipartisanship. It’s time to put people over politics. It’s time to get to work.”

Congressman David Trone was elected to the House of Representatives in November 2018 to serve the 6th District of Maryland, which includes all or part of Montgomery, Frederick, Washington, Allegany, and Garrett Counties. During the 117th Congress, Trone served on the Appropriations, Veterans’ Affairs, and Joint Economic Committees. In Congress, Trone is fighting to make progress on issues that matter to Marylanders, including the mental health and addiction crises, criminal justice reform, and funding for medical research.
