In Response to Crushing Funding Cuts in Extreme Republicans’ Debt Ceiling Proposal, Congressman Trone Asks, “Is This What We Stand For?”

Today, Congressman David Trone (D-MD) delivered remarks on the House floor during the debate on Speaker McCarthy’s Limit, Save, Grow Act (a.k.a. Full remarks below:

“Mister Speaker, I rise to urge my colleagues to vote against the extremist Republicans’ ‘Default on our Debt Act.’

“The legislation offered by Speaker McCarthy really begs the question: Is this what we stand for?

“The Default on Our Debt Act will make a 22% cut to our education system, our students, and our nation’s future competitiveness. Is this what we stand for?

“It makes a 22% cut to our VA and law enforcement – including health care for America’s brave and state grants that fund the prosecution of domestic violence cases. Is this what we stand for?

“It makes a 22% cut to the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children, which helps feed 53% of infants in the US and ensures they have nutritious food to survive. Is this what we stand for?

“It’s certainly not what I stand for. I plan to vote “no” on this legislation. Thank you and I yield back.”
