Trone Announces over $790,000 for the TMA AmeriCorps Vista Project in Frederick

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman David Trone (D-MD) announced that Transform Mid-Atlantic in Frederick will receive $790,650 from AmeriCorps, the federal agency for service and volunteering, to support a new AmeriCorps VISTA project.

This investment will support up to 35 AmeriCorps VISTA members per year to perform activities such as creating a pipeline of mentoring services for under-resourced students; developing outreach and resources for unemployed and underemployed adult learners; coordinating community programming that empowers community youth through employment and leadership coaching; increasing first-generation low-income access and readiness for post-secondary education; providing resources and job skills for survivors of human trafficking; and offering K-12 students opportunities to learn about civic life through the arts.

“Our nation works best when we give those in need a helping hand, that’s why I’m proud to announce that AmeriCorps will be investing in some of Frederick’s most vulnerable communities,” said Congressman David Trone. “The AmeriCorps Vista project will ensure that our low-income students are given the resources needed to thrive and expand employment opportunities to those who have been left behind for far too long. It’s simple: we’ve got to give folks a fair and fighting chance to succeed, and this investment will do just that.”

In addition to the award announced today, AmeriCorps will also provide $241,325 in education scholarships for the AmeriCorps VISTA members supported by this award to help pay for college, vocational training, or pay back student loans.

Every year, tens of thousands of AmeriCorps members serve through 21,000+ schools, nonprofits, community and faith-based organizations, and state, tribal, and local governments across the country. Since the program’s inception in 1994, more than 1 million Americans have served in AmeriCorps, providing more than 1.6 billion hours of service and earning more than $4 billion in education scholarships. Congressman David Trone was elected to the House of Representatives in November 2018 to serve the 6th District of Maryland, which includes all or part of Montgomery, Frederick, Washington, Allegany, and Garrett Counties. Trone serves on the Appropriations, Budget, and Joint Economic Committees in the 118th Congress. In Congress, Trone is fighting to make progress on issues that matter to Marylanders.
