News From the District: Trone Delivers Federal Funding for Frederick County Firefighter Staffing and Boys & Girls Club of Washington County

Rep. Trone, Senator Cardin, and Senator Van Hollen attend the groundbreaking for the Boys & Girls Club of Washington County

FREDERICK, MD — On Friday, Congressman David Trone was joined by Senators Ben Cardin and Chris Van Hollen (all D-Md.) in celebrating federal funding for the Boys & Girls Club of Washington County and Frederick County firefighters. Trone secured $4 million in Community Project Funding for the Boys & Girls Club to build a new clubhouse last Congress and spoke at a press conference to announce $9.7 million in Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) funding for Frederick County.

Trone first visited the groundbreaking of the clubhouse alongside Hagerstown Mayor Tekesha Martinez and CEO of Washington County’s Boys & Girls Club, Addie Nardi. Studies show that 97 percent of teens who participate in the Boys & Girls Club expect to graduate high school and 76 percent of kids who attend the club regularly achieve above a 3.0 GPA. Thanks to the new clubhouse, the average daily attendance is expected to increase by 100 members and serve as many as 500 kids and teens daily. Funding will also be used to create a new teen center and workforce development program.

Next, Trone joined Frederick County Executive Jessica Fitzwater and Division of Fire & Rescue Services Chief Tom Coe at Northgate Fire Station to announce $9.7 million to recruit and hire more firefighters. Last year, Frederick County applied for the SAFER grant to fill staffing shortages in their four-person engine and ladder truck crews. During the press conference, Trone thanked the firefighters for their service and stressed the importance of investing in public safety.

“I came to Congress to invest in our local communities and deliver much-needed resources to Marylanders. We’re setting our children up for success and supporting our firefighters – who make daily sacrifices to keep us safe every day,” said Congressman David Trone. “Today, we demonstrated what happens when the government works for the people, and both of these efforts will help us build a better Maryland for the next generation. You can count on it.”

Congressman David Trone was elected to the House of Representatives in November 2018 to serve the 6th District of Maryland, which includes all or part of Montgomery, Frederick, Washington, Allegany, and Garrett Counties. Trone serves on the Appropriations, Budget, and Joint Economic Committees in the 118th Congress. In Congress, Trone is fighting to make progress on issues that matter to Marylanders.
