Democratic House Appropriator Congressman David Trone Releases Statement Supporting Clean CR to Avert Republican-Driven Government Shutdown

Congressman David Trone (D-MD), a member of the House Appropriations Committee, released the following statement announcing his support of a clean continuing resolution to avert a government shutdown:

“Today, I will vote to avert a government shutdown, maintain current funding levels for vital federal programs, and protect American families. I urge my Congressional colleagues in the Senate to act soon to pass this bill into law.

“But as a member of the House Appropriations Committee, I remain deeply frustrated and concerned about how we got here and what lies ahead. For months, House Republicans have demanded devastating and unsustainable funding cuts to federal programs American families depend on, and now they’ve needlessly engineered two funding cliffs that will only create uncertainty around the holidays.

“Maryland is home to nearly 150,000 federal workers and 48,000 troops who would be furloughed or forced to work without on-time pay during a shutdown. Days after a government funding lapse, 120,000 Marylanders would lose access to a program known as WIC, which provides nutritious food for their infants.

“Democrats held the line to ensure extreme Republican policy riders and devastating funding cuts were not included in the stopgap funding bill. This measure and the process to pass it was not perfect, but I will do everything in my power to secure the long-term funding Americans need to thrive and deliver aid to assist our allies, Israel and Ukraine.

“I continue to call on Republican leadership to do its job and govern responsibly by honoring the bipartisan deal Congress and the White House agreed to in May and passing funding bills that serve our communities – not their campaigns.”

Congressman David Trone was elected to the House of Representatives in November 2018 to serve the 6th District of Maryland, which includes all or part of Montgomery, Frederick, Washington, Allegany, and Garrett Counties. Trone serves on the Appropriations, Budget, and Joint Economic Committees. In Congress, Trone is fighting to make progress on issues that matter to Marylanders.
