Rep. David Trone on Frederick Shooting: How Many More People Have to Die for Senate Republicans to Take Action on Gun Violence?
WASHINGTON – Today, Representative David Trone (MD-06) released the following statement following reports of a shooting in Frederick, Maryland:
“My heart goes out to the two U.S. Navy Sailors who are in critical condition following the shooting in Frederick this morning. I want to commend the Frederick Police Department, Ft. Detrick Police Department and EMS, Brigadier General Michael J. Talley, and other local officials who are working with the community to coordinate efforts and make sure everyone is safe.
“Americans are sick of breaking news alerts about deaths from gun violence. Today, the Frederick community, including thousands of military personnel serving at Ft. Detrick, experienced the terrifying feeling of checking in on friends and family following news that gun violence had broken out in their community.
“Frederick is a close-knit community with strong leadership, and I know they will band together during this horrific time. It’s leadership in Washington that I’m concerned about.
“While Americans are terrified to go to the store, church, movie theater, or even school because of gun violence, Republicans in the Senate are blocking common-sense gun reform that has passed the House of Representatives in the last two terms in Congress. Terrified adults and children have reached out to me yearning for some sort of change from Washington to curb gun violence. It sickens me that I have nothing to tell them because of a handful of Senators blocking policies that 90% of Americans support.
“It’s time for Republicans in the Senate to wake up to the reality that people are dying because of gun violence. Frederick experienced this today.
“Senators, how many more people have to die for you to take action on gun violence?”
Congressman David Trone was elected to the House of Representatives in November 2018 to serve the 6th District of Maryland, which includes all or part of Montgomery, Frederick, Washington, Allegany, and Garrett Counties. Trone serves on the Appropriations, Veterans’ Affairs, and Joint Economic Committees in the 117th Congress and previously served on the Education and Labor and Foreign Affairs Committees.
