Today, Congressman David Trone (MD-06) applauded the Maryland Senate and House of Delegates for voting to override Governor Hogan’s veto of the “ban the box” legislation. Trone recently helped lead the effort to “ban the box” for federal employees and contractors, which President Trump signed into law as part of the National Defense Authorization Act. Trone is now drafting legislation that would “ban the box” as a hiring practice for private sector businesses.
“I applaud the Maryland Senate and House of Delegates votes to override Governor Hogan’s veto of the ‘ban the box’ legislation. As someone transitions back into society, it’s a win for families, communities, and our economy when we break down the barriers that prevent people from earning a living and starting a new life. Unfortunately, once convicted of a crime, it becomes much harder to find a job and be given a fair chance.
“Before I came to Congress, I ran a business that ‘banned the box’ on employment applications, resulting in the hiring of more than 500 returning citizens. We all lose out when we don’t benefit from the contributions that everyone, including those formerly incarcerated, can contribute to our communities.
“I look forward to continuing to work with legislators at the state and federal level to push for reforms to our criminal justice system that make our state and country more just and fair for every person.”
