Rep. David Trone Releases Report on Impact of the Bill to Lower the Cost of Prescription Drugs on Maryland Families
Washington, DC – Today, Representative David Trone (MD-06) released a report outlining the impact H.R. 3, the Elijah E. Cummings Lower Drug Costs Now Act would have on Maryland’s Sixth District.
The report found that more than 600,000 individuals in Maryland’s 6th District would benefit from the bill, which would allow the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to negotiate lower prices for drugs and caps annual out-of-pocket costs for seniors.
“I’ve heard time and time again from constituents about the skyrocketing cost of prescription drugs, and this report proves it,” said Congressman Trone. “No one should have to choose between feeding their families and filling their prescriptions. By passing H.R. 3 we are finally putting the American people over the interests of the biggest drug companies.”
The report found that there are 81,546 people enrolled in a Medicare Part D plan and 541,867 people enrolled in private health insurance who stand to benefit from the passage of H.R. 3 in Maryland’s 6th District. Specifically, the report found that H.R. 3 could result in:
- Maryland residents spending 3.5 times less on insulin.
- Lower costs for breast cancer medication, leukemia medication, and prostate cancer medication by 65%, 71%, and 66%, respectively.

The release of the report follows a roundtable Rep. Trone held in November in Gaithersburg on the high cost of prescription drugs. The roundtable featured several constituents who wrote to Trone about their personal struggles affording prescription drugs. Trone previously released a report on the high cost of prescription drugs for individuals with diabetes in the Sixth District.
Congressman David Trone was elected to the House of Representatives in November 2018 to serve the 6th District of Maryland, which includes all or part of Montgomery, Frederick, Washington, Allegany, and Garrett Counties. Trone serves on the Education and Labor, Foreign Affairs, and Joint Economic Committees, where he is fighting to make progress on issues that matter to Marylanders, including the opioid epidemic, criminal justice reform, and funding for medical research.
