Maryland Native Dr. Lora Hargrove Delivers Invocation to the U.S. House of Representatives with Rep. Trone
Washington, DC – Today, Dr. Lora Hargrove from Mount Calvary Baptist Church in Rockville gave the opening prayer before the U.S. House of Representatives upon the recommendation of Rep. David Trone (MD-06).
In the House of Representatives, Members have the ability to recommend a Guest Chaplain to deliver the session’s opening prayer.
In her invocation, Dr. Hargrove highlighted our shared humanity and the importance of uplifting marginalized people.
“As the diligent work to silence ideological stalemates, to give voice to Ubuntu – shared humanity toward others – concretize concerns for all Americans, especially the multitude of the marginalized,” said Dr. Hargrove to the House floor. “Help us all to understand the clarion call to be unified, not uniform; to embrace diversity, despite racial, religious and gender differences, knowing that difference is never synonymous with deficience.”
Following the opening prayer, Trone gave remarks honoring the work Dr. Hargrove has done for the community.
“From hosting HBCU College Fairs to finding shelter for women and children, Dr. Hargrove lifts up our community every day,” said Congressman David Trone. “Her call for unity, shared humanity, and peace is perhaps more important today than ever before.”
Dr. Hargrove is a native of Baltimore, Maryland and comes from a long line of servant leaders. Her father, the late Judge John R. Hargrove Sr., was the first black federal prosecutor in Baltimore and first black Deputy U.S. Attorney. Her mother, Shirley H. Hargrove, was a teacher and guidance counselor. Dr. Hargrove now serves as Interim Pastor at Rockville’s Mount Calvary Baptist Church.
Congressman David Trone was elected to the House of Representatives in November 2018 to serve the 6th District of Maryland, which includes all or part of Montgomery, Frederick, Washington, Allegany, and Garrett Counties. Trone serves on the Education and Labor, Foreign Affairs, and Joint Economic Committees, where he is fighting to make progress on issues that matter to Marylanders, including the opioid epidemic, criminal justice reform, and funding for medical research.
