Rep. David Trone and U.S. Department of Labor Secretary Marty Walsh Visit the Potomac Job Corps Center to Celebrate the Reopening of In-Person Learning
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Friday, U.S. Congressman David Trone (MD-06) and U.S. Department of Labor Secretary Marty Walsh visited the Potomac Job Corps Center to announce the official relaunch of Job Corps. The Center had closed its in-person functions amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
“After spending most of my life in the business world, I’ve seen first-hand how important it is for young people to get the training they need to succeed,” said Congressman Trone. “I will continue to support the Job Corps program because it’s done some truly incredible things. It’s helped folks find their passions in life and turn that into long-lasting careers. Programs like Job Crops lead to a thriving, competitive workforce and a booming economy.”
“The reopening of new student enrollment at Job Corps is an important step forward in our nation’s recovery from the pandemic,” said Secretary of Labor Marty Walsh. “On-center learning and the supports that centers provide help students take greater advantage of Job Corps’ training and educational opportunities. In turn, students will be better equipped to contribute and benefit as our nation grows stronger.”
During the visit, Trone and Walsh hosted a roundtable discussion with Representative Eleanor Norton Holmes (D-DC), Chairman Sanford Bishop (D-GA), and Job Corps participants to learn about the best ways the lawmakers can support students. The discussion touched on the services provided at the Job Corps centers, oversight and reporting, mental health support, and ways to improve the program.
Job Corps is an educational and vocational training program administered by the Department of Labor dedicated to helping young adults and teens graduate high school, get ready for the workforce, and find a job. The program also provides transitional support services, such as housing, child care and transportation. There are 121 Job Corps residential centers in the U.S., and roughly 45,000 people attend the program annually.
Congressman David Trone was elected to the House of Representatives in November 2018 to serve the 6th District of Maryland, which includes all or part of Montgomery, Frederick, Washington, Allegany, and Garrett Counties. Trone serves on the Appropriations, Veterans’ Affairs, and Joint Economic Committees in the 117th Congress and previously served on the Education and Labor and Foreign Affairs Committees. In Congress, Trone is fighting to make progress on issues that matter to Marylanders, including the mental health and addiction crises, criminal justice reform, and funding for medical research.
