Trone, Thompson Discuss Gun Reform During Gun Violence Awareness Month

Reps. David Trone and Mike Thompson discuss the need for common-sense gun legislation during a “Trone Talk” for Gun Violence Awareness Month

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, a recorded conversation between Congressman David Trone (D-MD) and Congressman Mike Thompson (D-CA) was released to recognize Gun Violence Awareness Month. Trone spoke with the Chairman of the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force to discuss legislative steps Congress can take to prevent the rise in gun violence. The two discussed the need for universal background checks, raising the legal age to purchase a firearm, and key components in the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, which was signed into law by President Biden on Saturday.

“A few weeks ago, Smithsburg – a town in Western Maryland – fell victim to a mass shooting that resulted in the loss of three lives. The truth is clear as day: gun violence is out of control in this country and our fellow Americans are calling on us to pass common-sense gun safety laws,” said Congressman David Trone, Member of the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force. “As a lifelong gun owner myself, I proudly voted for the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act to strengthen mental health resources and ensure firearms remain in safe hands. Now signed into law, this successful effort goes to show what we can do as a country, and as a Congress when we work together in the best interest of our communities.” 

“June is the month that we try to draw attention to the fact that there’s a real problem regarding gun violence across our country,” said Congressman Mike Thompson, Chairman of the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force. “There are common-sense gun violence prevention laws that will save lives while respecting the Second Amendment, including the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act that President Biden signed into law last weekend. Our constituents, and constituents across our country, have become much more vocal as gun violence ravages communities in every state. I’m proud to work with colleagues like Rep. Trone to support life-saving provisions and deliver on the policies that are overwhelmingly supported by our constituents.”

Saturday, President Biden signed the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, the most comprehensive gun reform legislation in decades, into law. The law provides:

• Support for state red flag laws;
• Protections for victims of domestic violence;
• Enhanced background checks for 18-20-year-olds; 
• Community-based violence prevention; and
• Investment in mental health services.

Congressman David Trone was elected to the House of Representatives in November 2018 to serve the 6th District of Maryland, which includes all or part of Montgomery, Frederick, Washington, Allegany, and Garrett Counties. Trone serves on the Appropriations, Veterans’ Affairs, and Joint Economic Committees. In Congress, Trone is fighting to make progress on issues that matter to Marylanders, including the mental health and addiction crises, criminal justice reform, and funding for medical research.
