Democratic House Appropriator Congressman David Trone Releases Full Statement Applauding House Vote to Avert Republican-Driven Government Shutdown

Congressman David Trone (D-MD), a member of the House Appropriations Committee, released the following statement after voting for a clean continuing resolution to avert a full government shutdown earlier this afternoon:

“Today, House Democrats voted to avert a government shutdown and protect American families. For the millions of Americans – including over two million active troops and reservists – who were bracing for furloughs or work without on-time pay, this is news to celebrate.

“Democrats held the line to ensure extreme Republican policy riders and devastating funding cuts were not included in the stopgap funding bill. This measure and the process to pass it was not perfect, but I will do everything in my power in the next 45 days to secure the long-term funding Americans need to thrive and deliver the aid needed to prevail against Putin’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine.

“Moving forward, I remain deeply frustrated and concerned about how we got here and what lies ahead. For months, House Republicans have demanded devastating and unsustainable funding cuts to federal programs American families depend on. So far, I don’t see that changing as Speaker McCarthy perpetually bends to a handful of his loudest, most right-wing members.

“As a member of the House Appropriations Committee, I continue to call on Republican leadership to honor the bipartisan deal we all agreed on in May and pass funding bills that actually serve our communities – not their campaigns. Today was a victory for the American people. Tomorrow, we continue our fight for them.”

Congressman David Trone was elected to the House of Representatives in November 2018 to serve the 6th District of Maryland, which includes all or part of Montgomery, Frederick, Washington, Allegany, and Garrett Counties. Trone serves on the Appropriations, Veterans’ Affairs, and Joint Economic Committees. In Congress, Trone is fighting to make progress on issues that matter to Marylanders.
