Congressman David Trone Hosts Conversation with Pediatrician and Congresswoman Kim Schrier on How to Help Children Cope with the COVID-19 Pandemic
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman David Trone (MD-06) hosted a conversation about how to help children cope with the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic with pediatrician and Congresswoman Kim Schrier (WA-08). The conversation is the second in a new series hosted by Trone called ‘Candid COVID Conversations,’ which will feature periodic discussions covering some of the most pressing issues during the COVID-19 pandemic. His first discussion featured a conversation on mental health with Congressman Joe Kennedy III (MA-04).

“The COVID-19 outbreak has greatly disrupted children’s lives and caused increased stress, loneliness, and food insecurity for families across the country,” said Congressman Trone. “I was honored to talk to my colleague and pediatrician Congresswoman Schrier about how we can talk to our kids to help them cope with the pandemic and what we can do to make sure we aren’t leaving any children or families behind.”
Congresswoman Schrier is the only woman doctor in Congress, where she sits on the House Education and Labor Committee with Congressman Trone. In the conversation, the duo discussed tactics to help children cope with the isolation they may feel by being away from school, the disparity in education that is now exacerbated for low-income and disadvantaged homes, and what we need to do in order to make sure that students are still receiving meals even though schools are closed during the COVID-19 pandemic.
As the only member of the Maryland delegation on the House Education and Labor Committee, Congressman Trone has consistently emphasized the importance of investing in the long-term success of our nation’s children. Following the COVID-19 outbreak, Trone immediately connected with the education leaders in Maryland, holding multiple virtual meetings with superintendents and school leaders. Last week, he held a tele-roundtable with Maryland public school leaders to discuss how we can ensure students have access to healthy and nutritious meals during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Since the outbreak he has urged Congressional Leadership to prioritize youth mental health in the next COVID-19 stimulus package, held a webinar on how to protect you and your children from COVID-19 scams, and this week will lead an effort to urge the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to continue issuing nationwide waivers to respond to the growing need of families impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
