News From the District: Congressman Trone Visits Mental Health Facilities and an Education Center
Rep. Trone visits UPMC Western Maryland’s Center for Hope and Healing
CUMBERLAND, MD — Last Friday, Congressman David Trone (D-MD) traveled to Western Maryland to visit mental health and addiction service facilities and the site of one of his FY24 Community Project Funding requests.
Trone’s first stop was San Mar Family and Community Services in Boonsboro to learn more about the programming they provide for children who’ve experienced trauma at a young age. He joined President and CEO Keith Fanjoy for a tour of the center and to discuss their approach to individualized and intensive treatment for children and adolescents who would otherwise be placed in institutional settings.
Next, Trone visited the Carver Community Center with Cumberland Mayor Ray Morriss to discuss his $2 million Community Project Funding request to renovate the center. The center, originally the first African American school in Allegany County, provides folks with free individualized computer training and business skills. Once funding is secured, the building renovations would allow them to house local nonprofits, such as the Boys and Girls Club and Goodwill Horizon.
His final stop was UPMC Western Maryland’s Center for Hope and Healing, a residential care facility for adults fighting mental illness and substance use disorder. During the visit, Trone got to see the eight-bed facility and talk with staff about the investments provided in the Restoring Hope for Mental Health and Well-Being Act, which was included in last year’s government funding package.
“One in five Marylanders are suffering from a mental health condition, and only a fraction receive the help they need. With mental illness and overdoses on the rise, we must provide folks with the resources needed to access high-quality mental health and addiction treatment,” said Congressman David Trone. “These facilities are giving a helping hand to those fighting these diseases – those in the shadows of life – when they need it most. That’s something we can all get behind.”
Congressman David Trone was elected to the House of Representatives in November 2018 to serve the 6th District of Maryland, which includes all or part of Montgomery, Frederick, Washington, Allegany, and Garrett Counties. Trone serves on the Appropriations, Budget, and Joint Economic Committees in the 118th Congress. In Congress, Trone is fighting to make progress on issues that matter to Marylanders, including the mental health and addiction crises, criminal justice reform, and funding for medical research.
