Congressman David Trone Hosts Conversation with Dr. Ruth Karron of Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health on COVID-19 Vaccines
WASHINGTON — Today, Congressman David Trone (MD-06) released his conversation about COVID-19 vaccines with Dr. Ruth Karron, professor of International Health in the Bloomberg School of Public Health and the Department of Pediatrics in the School of Medicine.
This is the fifth conversation in a series hosted by Trone called Candid COVID Conversations, which feature periodic discussions covering some of the most pressing issues during the COVID-19 pandemic. He has previously held conversations on mental health with former Congressman Joe Kennedy III (MA-04), children’s health and wellbeing with Congresswoman Kim Schrier (WA-08), our nation’s health and higher education systems with former U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Burwell, and nutrition with Chairman Jim McGovern (MA-02).

“With vaccine distribution beginning to increase across the country, I was honored to speak with Dr. Karron to learn more about the different vaccines, their safety, and how we can get as many people vaccinated as quickly as possible,” said Congressman David Trone. “Dr. Karron answered many questions I’ve been receiving from constituents confirming the safety and reliability of the COVID-19 vaccines. She also reaffirmed the need to fund medical research to prepare us for any future health emergencies in the future. Our country is grateful for her service.”
Dr. Ruth Karron is a pediatric infectious diseases physician, virologist, and vaccinologist, and is Director of the Center for Immunization Research and the Johns Hopkins Vaccine Initiative. She is currently a member of the WHO Product Development for Vaccines Advisory Committee (PDVAC), the Gavi Vaccine Innovation Prioritisation Steering Committee (VIPS), and the COVAX ACT-acclerator COVID vaccine Maternal Immunization Working Group. She also chaired the Vaccines Advisory Panel for the Wellcome Trust.
In the conversation, the duo discussed how the COVID-19 vaccine was created, what makes it different from other vaccines, common misconceptions about the vaccine, and the importance of investing in medical research.
Congressman David Trone was elected to the House of Representatives in November 2018 to serve the 6th District of Maryland, which includes all or part of Montgomery, Frederick, Washington, Allegany, and Garrett Counties. Trone serves on the Appropriations, Veterans’ Affairs, and Joint Economic Committees in the 117th Congress and previously served on the Education and Labor and Foreign Affairs Committees. In Congress, Trone is fighting to make progress on issues that matter to Marylanders, including the opioid epidemic, criminal justice reform, and funding for medical research.
