Congressman David Trone Announces His Appointment to Three Powerful Appropriations Subcommittees in 117th Congress

Trone now well-positioned to protect Maryland jobs, rebuild our infrastructure, and reform our criminal justice system

WASHINGTON — Today, Congressman David Trone announced the three subcommittees that he will serve on in the powerful House Appropriations Committee following his appointment earlier this year:

  • Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies
  • Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies
  • Military Construction, Veterans Affairs, and Related Agencies

The Appropriations Committee is the most powerful committee in Congress. With one of the broadest jurisdictions, the committee is responsible for appropriating funding for the federal government. Trone joins the committee at the start of his second term representing Maryland’s 6th District, which includes all or part of Montgomery, Frederick, Washington, Allegany, and Garrett Counties.

“These subcommittees will give me a chance to work on issues I know are important to everyday Marylanders, from passing an infrastructure bill that includes universal broadband to making mental health and substance use disorder a priority for veteran health care,” said Congressman Trone. “We need to take real steps to reform our unjust criminal justice system and protect jobs at critical departments like NASA, NIST, and Fort Detrick. Under the leadership of Chairwoman Rosa DeLauro, I know we will create legislation that puts the working families and children of this country first and creates long-term policies that reflect our values.”

Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies

Congressman Trone knows firsthand the impact infrastructure and transportation can have in the lives and economic outlook of everyday Americans. In Congress, he’s been a constant advocate for universal broadband as a part of the Rural Broadband Task Force and led the charge for increased funding for vital transportation projects in Maryland, including the completion of the Appalachian Highway Development System.

The Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies Subcommittee has jurisdiction over the following agencies:

  • Department of Housing and Urban Development
  • Department of Transportation
  • Related Agencies

Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies

In Congress, Trone has championed legislation to create a more equitable justice system. He has introduced bills to incentivize local governments and community partners to invest in programs to reduce jail populations and reform their pretrial justice systems, ban the box on private sector employment applications, and repeal the ban on incarcerated individuals receiving Pell Grants. He has also led efforts to increase federal investments in state juvenile justice programs that foster better outcomes for youth.

Trone has made investing in science and medical research a top priority while in Congress, working to increase federal investment in Maryland’s own National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and National Institutes of Health (NIH), and others.

The Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies Subcommittee has jurisdiction over the following agencies:

During his time in Congress, Trone has worked in close partnership with Fort Detrick by helping to restore USAMRIID and the National Biodefense Analysis and Countermeasures Center to their full capacities. On the Military Construction, Veterans Affairs, and Related Agencies subcommittee, he will continue to advocate for 21st century investments that reflect our nation’s values.

The Military Construction, Veterans Affairs, and Related Agencies Subcommittee has jurisdiction over the following agencies:
